The First Noel

The First Noel

One of my favorite Christmas songs about the birth of Jesus is “The First Noel.” Noel is a French word from the Latin word natalis, which means “birth.”  It is an English carol that was sung by the village people as they brought in the Yule log on Christmas Eve each year.  They would burn the Yule log to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. Now that will preach!

Psalm 89:15 tells us, “Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.” And in Matthew 11:30, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

God reminds us in the Bible about His extreme care He has for us.  In the Psalm verse the word, “light“ is written to have the meaning of guidance, but in the book of Matthew, the word “light” is with the meaning of something easy to carry, not heavy.  OR could it be the intent of the word “light” is the same in both verses?

Now, look at the end of God’s redemptive story, Revelation 21:23, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb (First Noel) is its lamp.”

Friends, I pray this Christmas season you will let The Lamb of God’s light triumph over your darkness, for His light IS light!

Father God, because of your gift of the Holy Spirit within us, enable us to surrender all and walk in the light of Your presence. For Your light gives us peace and an ability to NOT let darkness be our friend. May we all rejoice in the miracle of the birth of Jesus not just this season, but all year long.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
