When Words Fail by Sammi Whitwell

Have you ever been in a place where you’re trying to pray but nothing comes out? You’re either so mad or sad or confused or lonely that you can’t come up with adequate words to express how you’re feeling. I’ve been there many times.

What I’ve found helpful in those confusing, wordless moments is opening my Bible to the Psalms and letting those words speak for me. I read Psalms out loud to God and use the words as my personal prayer. There is so much emotion, truth, and discovery in the Psalms already, and just by reading them out loud, I can begin to feel God’s peace over me. I feel His presence with me. Here are a few examples:

When you feel desperate, try praying Psalm 55:

“My heart is in anguish within me;

     the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

Fear and trembling come upon me,

     and horror overwhelms me…

But I call to God,

     and the Lord will save me.

Evening and morning and at noon

     I utter my complaint and moan,

     and he hears my voice.

He redeems my soul in safety

     from the battle that I wage,

     for many are arrayed against me.”

Psalm 55:4-5, 16-18

When you feel fearful, try praying Psalm 56:

“Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

     all day long an attacker oppresses me;

my enemies trample on me all day long,

     for many attack me proudly.

When I am afraid,

     I put my trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise,

     in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

     What can flesh do to me?”

Psalm 56:1-4

Let God’s Word speak for you. When you pray the Word, you’ll often find that God will use His Word to speak back to you.

Reminder: It’s not too late to join us on May 6th for a one-day training: Hidden Treasures in Plain Sight. This training will teach you how to read the Bible for transformation.
