Receive and Respond

We strive for a successful, happy life.  We are starved for real relationships, and work that is purposeful. We spend many days searching for significance. We cry out to the Lord when we are hurting and when our striving leads to just barely living. We so desperately want to live well.  In John 10:10, Jesus tells us that He alone came to give us life to the full. His Word tells us, several times throughout scripture, if we seek Him, wholeheartedly, “He will be found.”

The woman who needed healing, in Mark 5, was willing to seek Him.  Although she could face extreme humility, rejection, and even death, she was ready.  She believed wholeheartedly that if she could only touch the hem of Christ’s garment, healing would come to her.  This woman knew the words of Jesus meant life, but she did something we only talk about doing.  This nameless woman reached for those words of life.  But the key was what she did next.  In her bankrupt, isolated, weakened state of continual blood loss for over 12 years, she not only reached for Jesus, but she also received His words and responded to His words.

Why do we have such a hard time receiving what the Lord so freely gives? He gives us grace, mercy, life-giving words, but yet we won’t open our hands or hearts to receive.  Friends, words spoken by Jesus, whatever they are, no matter the implications they have for our lives offer the significance we are searching for.  His words provide us new dreams, new plans, and new attitudes to start again. God isn’t hiding from us. He wants us to “seek” Him with open hands.  In other words, don’t pray unless you are willing to obey.

Lord, thank you that you hear our cries, that you can deliver us from all fears. Lord, help us to seek You in ALL things. And as you call us by name, grant me the strength to let go and receive Your guidance, Your healing, and Your peace.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
