What Have You Allowed to Define You?

This weekend I heard the question asked, “Who are you?” and it has lingered with me. So much so that I made a video and sent it to my girls, who are in college, reminding them that their identity is in Christ and Christ alone.

I have been guilty of forgetting this very fact for myself.

I have been guilty of describing myself as a widow. My husband has been gone for over 17 years and I still mark the widow box on all my paperwork. Even now when someone asks if I am married, I tell them I am a widow when a simple no would suffice.

I have been guilty of describing myself as a mom and honestly didn’t see myself in any other way for a very long time. My girls have been my world for so long that I’ve been a little lost without them over this past year. I’ve always known the day would come when they would “fly the coop” but nothing really prepares you for when it actually happens. This season of life for me has been a tough one to adjust to. People that I thought would be here with me and for me during this time are no longer here.

I have been guilty of letting that grief of losing them and the life I imagined with them define me. For much longer than I care to admit, I would let it define how my day went, how I responded to others, how I took care of myself, and I would let it drain my spiritual well.

How many times have you let your circumstances define who you are?

I’ve just told you I am guilty of it even now but then I remember Ephesians 2:10 which tell us,

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We are created in Christ Jesus!

Not only are we created in Him but we are created for a purpose. He has a plan for us, a plan that has been prepared for a very long time. He is only waiting on us to come to Him so that He can equip us to see it through!

People talk about waiting on God but sometimes He is waiting on us!

Our identity is tied to whatever we give our heart to. When we are holding tight to our circumstances, we are giving our heart to those circumstances which keeps us from the very things He has promised to us.

He is waiting on us to give our hearts to Him completely and to realize He is all we need. We are complete in Him! Being a child of God is what should define you. When others look at you, they should see Him.

So I ask you today,

Who are you and what are you allowing to define you?
