Quicksand

You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.” Hebrews 1:10-12

While reading that passage, there were three words which I believe carry significance to what the author is trying to get the reader to understand. The words, “foundation,” “remain,” and “no end,” all show the consistency of God’s character. God IS the only constant thing in this changing world. When we trust in the Lord, we are standing on the firmest foundation- Jesus Christ.

A well-known hymn captures this truth: “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” “Sinking sand,” made me immediately get the visual of Quicksand. Quicksand properties consist of sand, clay, and water, which are very similar components to cement. Quicksand is tricky; it can appear to be stable. But once you step on it, you sink! And quickly, too, aka that’s why it’s called Quicksand. Many researchers and accredited sites say it’s impossible to fully sink because of the density of the human body vs. the sand. However, once in the Quicksand, it’s challenging to get out, it takes a considerable amount of force. According to some experts, it estimates that the force needed for someone to pull their foot out of the Quicksand at a speed of a centimeter a second would be equivalent of that required to lift a small car.

What you and I need in this life, is a solid foundation, one that remains, with no end! The world’s foundation is built upon sinking sand. And just like Quicksand, the world will try to pull you in and keep you there, trapped, struggling, starving, your body rapidly dehydrating and completely exposed to all kinds of weather, predators, and more.

The key to getting out of Quicksand alive, is to stop thrashing around and panicking. You can escape by slowly being progressive in your movements, and keeping your heart rate down. Once you get out, you must immediately wash your body clean of all the heavy sand packed on you and your clothes. Because if you don’t, your body will break out into blisters and boils. You must be washed clean.

I love how God illustrates Himself in everything, even in the analogy of Quicksand. God is the only firm foundation, the one that remains, all other ground is sinking sand.

Attached is a video link of the famous survival instructor, Bear Grylls. He demonstrates how to get out of Quicksand. Listen to what he says and think about how it pertains to the Gospel. One final note, you and I don’t intentionally want to be in Quicksand, but it can happen. And when it does, and the “sinking sand” is pulling us down, as we struggle to get free, it is ONLY Jesus that can lift us out without breaking us, and only His Living Water can wash us clean.

Dear Lord,
Thank you for being constant when everything else in this world is fickle and changing. Thank you for lifting us out of the Quicksand and washing us clean because you gave your only Son to die for us. Lord, as we run the race of life, would you give us great discernment on what is quicksand vs. Your solid foundation. Thank you, Lord, for loving us and choosing to set the captives free. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
