Oh, How I Wish I …

Chances are everyone reading that line has their own completion of that sentence. It’s also probable that you’ve thought that more than a time or two.

Did your thought finish with “was prettier” or “smarter”? Was your wish “richer” or “thinner” or even “had not done that”?  It is part of human nature that we all desire something different from what we are or have.

These days, all I really want is “more energy.” Yes. More energy.

It’s not like my bucket list includes mountain climbing or a marathon.  I just don’t want to be exhausted before I even start my day or winded by playing with our 3-year-old grandson.

I want to be able to serve my family more fully. I want energy to lead in ministry and mentoring, to serve the Lord with the passion and fervor of my devotion. I want to be a light in the dark world. But God, whose rich mercies are new every morning, has given me all I need each day. Just as God is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, He gives me just enough light for my next step and the faith to take it.

So, too, has he been faithful to give me all the energy I need for each day. As I give Him each day as I awaken, He gives me everything I need to accomplish his plan. Of course, some days are harder than others, but none have been impossible when I face each day in His strength.

It occurred to me, giving God my life daily to Him is exactly what He wants and designed life to be—no more racing ahead under my own power—no more saying “yes” to every good offer to serve or every activity. Instead, I have to be more deliberate with my calendar. And God’s given me joy and contentment in that. So, I am narrowing my “yeses” to deepen the impact.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2Cor. 12:9

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Is. 40:29

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Is 40:31

We all have many choices each day. And every day has limited resources. As for me, I choose to serve the Lord. What do you wish for that only God can supply?

Heavenly Father, You desire to give your children good things. Your plan for us is good. Help us, Lord, to use those gifts to honor You. Whether it is time, talent, or energy, You have uniquely gifted each of us. And You can stretch each gift to cover each day. We are grateful. Give us discernment to know to say “yes” or “no” to our opportunities. Help us to be content with who we are in You.     In Jesus Name, Amen.”
