Empowered

I wrote a Bible study titled, “Fear, Faith, and the Forgotten God.”  The Forgotten God is the Holy Spirit.  Although the Holy Spirit makes His appearance in the very beginning of Genesis 1:2, 26, and He is throughout the entire Bible, with a grand entrance in the book of Acts, however, He tends to be forgotten.

The Holy Spirit never seems to get enough recognition, yet it is one of the main reasons Jesus died for us. Jesus took your name and mine with Him to the cross. He died instead of us so that we could be forgiven of all sins, holy enough to be in God’s presence, and live forever in freedom, with no pain, tears, or troubles. But Jesus also died so that the Holy Spirit could reside IN us so that we could live in His power. As J.D. Greear says; “The Holy Spirit “IN-side” us is better than Jesus “BE-side” us.”

God knows our flesh is weak and we cannot possibly live well on our own, we would need help to escape the evil desires of this world. When you look at the Scriptures you can see the road map. Galatians 2:20 tells us; “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”  Second Peter, chapter 1, reminds us again, “His divine power (Holy Spirit) has given us everything we need for life and godliness…”

Jesus dies, He is resurrected, and then comes back for forty days with hundreds of people seeing Him. Jesus clearly announces the coming of the Holy Spirit and His role.  Then 10 days later, on the day of Pentecost, “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…” Even 800 years earlier, the prophet Joel talked about the coming of the Holy Spirit, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”

Here’s my point. When you believe and accept Jesus died for you, the Holy Spirit then comes to dwell in you, you, the vessel.  He is a Spirit of power and love, and not fear. The Holy Spirit helps us live God’s ways and helps equip and empower us.  The issue is we don’t accept, welcome, or support this gift.

Embrace this gift!!  The thought of the living God dwelling in you is a hard thought to wrap your head around.  But if God can send Jesus to die in our place and raise Him from the dead (the basis of Christianity) then He can send the Holy Spirit to live in us.  However, the Forgotten God may dwell in us but is only empowered where He is wanted and fed.

Let the Holy Spirit lead you by taking time to pray, confessing your sins (The Spirit likes clean, pure vessels), surrendering your flesh to the His control, and soaking in God’s Word. Pray for the Holy Spirit to EMPOWER you and take over your life.

Gracious God, the giver of all good things, thank you for your gift of the Holy Spirit.  You gave us Your Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us in our weakness, to teach us, to lead us, and work immeasurably more in our lives. May we all be a vessel your Spirit is pleased to dwell within. I pray we all live and walk by the Spirit with results being that of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
